March Mayhem App

Dave, Reed, and I entered the Omniture iPhone App Competition last month. We have been hard at work on our application and I'd like to give you a small preview. We will be submitting the app to the App Store soon, but go ahead and click on the image to check out the site for it. And when it's live, go download it!

Mozy announces Computer Nightmare Video Contest winners

Mozy started a competition back in November where people could win free stuff (like a MacBook Pro) for making a video about a "computer nightmare." Mozy makes software that allows users to effortlessly backup their computers to an off-site location for extra security. So naturally, this contest falls within that vein. Some of the videos are pretty funny. Check out the winners here and also watch some of the "people who didn't win."

(By the way, in case you didn't already know, I started working for Mozy a couple weeks ago. Just disclosin'.)

New fan for my T43

Many of you who have hung out with many at some point in the last year have been introduced to my ThinkPad jet engine. Don't know what I'm talking about? My ThinkPad T43 has a fan that sounds like hair clippers. It's pretty embarrassing when I'm sitting in a group meeting and that thing kicks on. I've stopped pulling my laptop out during class because it is too distracting to those around me. Let me see if I can stick an audio sample of my laptop on here so you know what I'm talking about.

Click here to listen to my fan.

I purchased a new fan on eBay last week and it just arrived today. I am going to install the new fan in hopes that I can using my ThinkPad in class again! Of course, my new MacBook is scheduled to arrive tomorrow, it the ThinkPad won't get much more use. I will likely sell it off once I know the new fan is working well. The rest of the computer works phenomenally well. It's just...LOUD!

EyeTunes

We found something cool today while working on a new Cocoa project. It's called EyeTunes. It's an interface for interacting with the iTunes library from within your Cocoa app. Check it out:

It took about 10 minutes to get set up and start using it.

Captcha if you can!

I discovered last week that my site was getting blasted by spambots. They were posting links in the comments to lurid websites, which got parts of my site banned by some of the popular web filters. I deleted all the comments and then turned off the Comment module for a week until I had time to set up a CAPTCHA. Today I found some extra time and installed both the CAPTCHA and reCAPTCHA modules. I hope this stops the comment spammers. Time will tell.

Facebook hit by the Koobface virus

I saw this headline today and then got a phone call in the afternoon from a relative who was hit by it. Here's a summary of what it is:

  1. You receive a message from a friend that says, "You look funny in this video."
  2. If you click on the link, it takes you to an external video sharing website.
  3. It then tells you that your Adobe Flash is out-of-date and gives you a prompt to download it.
  4. If you do, it then installs the virus and does bad stuff to your computer.

Your first line of defense against this virus is, DON'T DOWNLOAD STUFF FROM SHADY WEBSITES! Seriously, if I go to a video sharing site and am told I need to download something, I tell that site to take a hike. If you're going to download something, make sure you're the one who initiated the process. Don't let a site dictate to you what you need to download unless you asked it to.

If you think you've been hit by the virus, check out Facebook's security page for help:
